Real Learning in the Real World

Although living in a world of over seven billion other persons, the individual has a distinctive place in her/his environment, to study, to reason, and to decide where he/she stands on all subjects affecting her/his life and actions.

When a person seeks to do her/his share in society, he/she finds himself/herself in the midst of organisations of massive size and complexity. The reaction 'There's nothing I can do that will matter' is something for every individual to avoid.

Being independent does not mean being indifferent or neutral on matters of private or public interest. Every movement that has become great, and every advance made in civilisation, started with an individual and was carried to completion by innumerable individuals expressing their individuality in co-operative action.

There is a time to stand up, to take sides, to be heard, to exert influence, to do something.

A snapshot of The Education Professionals Pty. Ltd. (TEP)

    Established in 1999

TEP is an innovative new model for education and training, providing services and products to support students, parents, teachers, business people and communities at a variety of levels, and with a wide range of interests and aspirations.

Research on creativity has long espoused that innovation rarely occurs in a vacuum, so the TEP’s practice is to invite the rest of the world to come and share what our team is doing.

At TEP we have created a flexible environment that welcomes ideas, tolerates risk, celebrates success, and maximizes idea generation through a combination of stimulation, tension and security.

The TEP management has begun to develop ‘win-win-win’ opportunities with like-minded associates, individuals and organisations.

Important complementary services for local and overseas students are provided by our partner organisations.

These services range from recruitment, courses consultation, accommodation, career counselling and student welfare, etc. Our local and international networks and strategic alliances enable effective links to be established.

    The TEP vision

No training organisations are ever quite alike, and none stays the same from one year to the next. These organisations usually reflect their communities - their students, teachers, administrative staff, directors, associates and the wider community in general.

TEP does not work in isolation but shares its experiences with the industry, and with other training organisations. The purpose of the collaboration is to generate sustained conversations about what the commonly held ideas might mean and how a variety of teachers, organisations and industries might assist each other.

TEP is a special creation of itself - its directors, associates, staff, clients and the wider community in general. These groups feel a collective responsibility for it, take its standards and its style seriously and protect its reputation.

The Directors and Associates of TEP believe that there is no such thing as a distinct, detailed blueprint for a good teaching/learning organisation any more than there is for a successful family. Just as with families, while not exhibiting precisely similar configurations and traditions, good teaching/learning organisations do share powerful guiding ideas, principles that are widely accepted even as they take different practical forms when a particular group of people in a particular setting shape them into day-to-day expectations and routines.

It is for these reasons that the Directors and Associates of TEP have developed a set of commonly held principles rather than as a 'model' to emulate. This 'road map' will provide focus, 'food for thought' and a range of seamlessly articulated pathways for students as well as staff.

TEP will encourage individuals and groups to share with, and borrow from each other's strengths. These relationships will provide support in times of pressure, and also be a rich source of ideas and strategies.

    The TEP beliefs

TEP and the individuals, families and groups associated with it must ultimately share a common set of beliefs about the purpose and practice of education and training.

    These principles call for:

    • Personalised, flexible and intellectually vibrant instruction to address individual needs and interests
    • Small groups, in which teachers and students know each other well and work in an atmosphere of trust and high expectations
    • Multiple student assessments based on performance of authentic tasks
    • Democratic and equitable school policies and practices
    • Close partnerships with the school's community
TEP and the individuals, families and groups associated with it should:

    • Consist of a diverse group of stakeholders
    • Have the internal resources and capacity to support and maintain programs
    • Clearly articulate the needs to be addressed, the clients to be served, and provide a compelling overall mission and concept
    • Be able to leverage local resources and support
The focus for TEP is to:

    • Increase student achievement
    • Foster teaching, learning, and an education and training culture that supports and encourages all students to reach high standards
    • Support education and training practices and encourage teachers who are innovative, competent and open to input from the broader community
    • Develop community connections that work in at least two ways:

      • The first assumes that the community understands and shares the vision and focus of the institute;
      • The second is that this understanding enables individuals from the community to take an active role in helping the institute reach high standards.
    • Enhance leadership opportunities and the responsibility for creating and sustaining a culture of inquiry
    • Commit to continuous improvement ensuring that the enthusiasm will never diminish, and the adults will forever model for students what it means to learn, grow and keep striving to fulfil one's potential.
